MPA’s agility as a small firm is key to our focus on design excellence. We collaborate closely with consulting firms of the highest caliber, as well as our network of collaborators, who contribute to specific technical challenges, producing documents, and finding opportunities for representation.
APPROACH
Our holistic approach encompasses the planning, design, and implementation of environments and structures that support 21st-century communities. This approach allows organizations to adapt and evolve over time. Through our multi-scalar analysis and interpretation of site, program, and operations, we design responsive and stimulating environments that promote physical health and well-being, environmental performance, and social resilience. By prioritizing early and ongoing attention to maintenance and operations, we create spaces that function optimally, have longevity, control and predict maintenance costs, and adapt to changing needs with maximum flexibility.
For MPA, design is a means of intensively revaluing existing elements of the world and reinventing them through innovative interventions. Every project involves engaging with preexisting natural and built conditions that have been shaped by physical forces and social practices before new needs promote their transformation. By closely examining the present and historical state, we derive meaning and express identity through designing reciprocal relationships between inside and outside, architecture and landscape, existing and new, and spaces and technologies. By uncovering synergies between client, program, and site, we identify solutions that transform constraints into opportunities, all while fulfilling needs and creating beauty.
Our projects strengthen the relationships between a site and its owners in order to situate actors in their surroundings. Minimal, calibrated interventions take into account the passage of time, changing light and season, orientation, as well as the metaphysical elements of history and atmosphere.
